At the 1985 Academy Award ceremony, the 1984 film Amadeus took home eight of the major statuettes, including one for best picture, best actor, best screenplay, best makeup, and best costume design.

The costumes for Amadeus were designed by Theodor Pistek, who would later go on to design for The People vs. Larry Flynt and Valmont. While Pistek’s imagining  of the 18th Century was very historically inaccurate, it was wild and fun.

This purple velvet frock coat was worn in Amadeus on Tom Hulce as the title character, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The coat went on to the used in Sofia Coppola’s 2006 Marie Antoinette, where it was worn on an extra.
